Tutorial – Imperial Fists painting guide

feb 13, 15 Tutorial – Imperial Fists painting guide

Hi

Tom DW asked me how to paint an imperial fist marine for his 30k project.

He showed me some examples of how he’d like them to turn out.

I decided to try out a quick easy scheme. I hope he likes it !

I painted this one up during a tournament I was judging, so the pictures are not great, sorry…

1. take a marine, spray it black ,then prehighlight it with a spray of white from above the model aka where the light comes from

2. apply slightly watered down foundation yellow

3. colorblock all details (red rimmed shoulderpad, white/black logo, eyes, metal,…)

image3

4. black wash all over it

image4

5. use the foundation yellow again but keep it away from the darker parts and recesses

6. highlight with bleached bone

7. weathering with charadon granite (sponge) and metal (brush), adding the metal only on the larger granited areas leaving some granite visible near the edges of your weathered areas.  Try this out beforehand on a spare model, some like it very subtle, i like it this way (Jerre calls it the”hit by a tank”look). I might even add soem tamiya weatheringpowders but Tom said it was fine as it is now. If you don’t like weathering i’d propose another finer highlight with white and then going to step 8

8. finish the other details you’ve colorblocked in step 3, do not forget the lens on the weapon and helmet and the scroll on the leg

9. add a sephia subtle wash to blend it all in

10. done, ready for basing and adding more details
